What effect does the use of different types of wood have on the instrument?

The tonewoods we use differ in terms of density, among other things. This influences how strongly the overtones sound, i.e. whether the fundamental tones or the treble tones are emphasized or attenuated – similar to how you can adjust an equalizer on loudspeakers.
