The barrel is the important link between the tone generator (mouthpiece/reed) and the resonator (upper/lower joint with bell) of the clarinet. It can influence the sound and playing in several ways: the basic tuning can be influenced within a small bandwidth (approx. 3 – 4 Hz), the intonation between registers can be adjusted, compatibility to different mouthpieces can take place. Also the sound behavior and the blowing resistance can be regulated to a certain extent.

The mouthpiece plays a decisive role in the blowing resistance and intonation of the instrument. For Seggelke clarinets, we recommend playing our instruments with mouthpieces with the bore we have modified. These customized mouthpieces bring out the full potential of your clarinet and let your musical interpretation shine.

Of course, we can also produce your desired bulb for various clarinets from other manufacturers in our Seggelke workshop. We need some time and some information from you:

What length should the barrel be?
What is the measurement of the upper tenon of the clarinet?
What bore, type of wood and shape should the barrel have?

THE SEGGELKE BENT BARREL SOLUTION
If the instrument becomes longer – the arms become “shorter”. In that case we have been inspired to find a solution for our basset clarinets in particular. Even on historical basset clarinets, there is a bent barrel between the upper joint and the mouthpiece.
The bend brings the instrument closer to the player’s body and you no longer have to stretch excessively to reach all the key buttons.
Bent barrels can even be useful on shorter clarinets, for children and adults of small statur. Here the kinked bulb works on a similar principle to the curved heads on children’s transverse flutes.

THE SEGGELKE BASSET HORN SOLUTION
The basset horn barrel developed by us ensures an improved connection between mouthpiece and upper joint, enabling an outstanding sound and perfect response. This innovative solution for all basset horns reduces the condensation water
significantly. In addition, tuning corrections can be made easily by simply changing the barrel. Our basset horn bent barrel fits instruments from all manufacturers and offers you a playing experience at the highest level. This “Wooden neck for basset horns” is patented and therefore only available at our Seggelke workshop.
