Clarinet reeds

PERFECT SOUND PRODUCTION

Our own brand JSB clarinet reeds are made especially for us by reed-making specialist Konrad Ossig. Only high-quality cane with a certificate of origin is used. Each reed is soaked twice by hand, sanded and cut to computer precision according to a template by Jochen Seggelke. JSB clarinet reeds achieve top results thanks to the combination of manual work and precise computer-controlled production.

HOW IS THE SOUND GENERATED?

Like the saxophone, the clarinet is a single-reed instrument. The players’s breath causes the reed to vibrate in a sawtooth motion. This causes the air pressure in the tube of the instrument to change abruptly. This creates sound waves. These vibrations are reflected or conveyed by the surrounding air. We perceive this alternation of low and high air pressure as sound. Music resonates!

CLARINET REEDS

REED KNOWLEDGE

Clarinet reeds are made from the giant cane Arundo donax, which grows mainly in Mediterranean regions and is similar to bamboo. The reeds are available in different thicknesses. The lower the number, the lighter the reed. The strength you choose depends on the opening and length of your mouthpiece facing, the bore of your clarinet and your physical abilities. We therefore recommend lighter reeds for beginners.

HANDLING

To try a reed, we recommend soaking it for about half a minute, leaving it upside down on a flat surface and then playing it. After some time, the underside should be sanded with a soft sandstone or with the help of waterproof sandpaper (grain 600-800). We recommend our sandblasted glass board for the underside treatment, which can be easily washed off and helps to achieve good results.

DURABILITY

The durability of a clarinet reed depends on how the player handles it. Carelessness can lead to cracks in the thin tip, resulting in squeaking or a lack of sound. Damaged reeds should be replaced immediately. Even with careful handling, the reed hardens over time due to silicic acid in the saliva, which leads to a loss of elasticity. If the reed has a gray surface, it should be replaced soon.
