The Digital Organology research center at the Musical Instrument Museum of the University of Leipzig not only provides an enormous amount of dense research data that can be used to gain an overview of instrumentology in its contexts and research it in detail, it also unearths 'gems' that exemplify the musical and cultural history of their respective times. The FRAKTAL book series focuses on the highlights of innovative object research in organology across all collections. The clarinets belonging to Prince Günther von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen were lost for over half a century, yet they are precious witnesses to a unique musical flourishing that made the tiny court famous throughout Europe at the beginning of the 19th century: with the virtuoso Hermstedt, the composer Spohr and the instrument maker Streitwolf. Their rediscovery marked the beginning of an exciting search for clues that brought together instruments, pictures and sheet music from archives, libraries and museums around the world.
