On request, we can supply our basset clarinets with so-called d’amore bells, which are pear-shaped or egg-shaped. This shape is still known and used today for the modern English horn tuned in F and the oboe d’amore tuned in A.
In contrast to the normal, open bell of a clarinet, the d’amore bell covers the low frequencies the lower you play and keeps the high overtones close to the instrument, which makes the sound finer but less powerful.
